Introduction
If you are familiar with industrial water treatment, you have probably heard of RO, or Reverse Osmosis. This technology is one of the most widely used methods for producing fresh and treated water in industrial applications. But how exactly does RO work?
What Is Natural Osmosis?
In nature, when two solutions with different salt concentrations are brought into contact, water naturally moves from the more dilute solution to the more concentrated one until equilibrium is reached. This phenomenon is called natural osmosis.
What Does Reverse Osmosis Do?
In an RO system, by applying high mechanical pressure to the concentrated solution side, the direction of water movement is reversed. As a result, water passes through a semi-permeable membrane, while salts, dissolved ions, heavy metals, and most contaminants are retained on the membrane.
How an Industrial RO System Works
1. Pre-Treatment
Raw water first passes through sand filters, carbon filters, and water softeners to reduce suspended solids, chlorine, and hardness. This stage is very important for protecting the membrane.
2. High-Pressure Pump
The pre-treated water is sent to the membranes by a high-pressure pump. Sufficient pressure is required to overcome the osmotic pressure of the feed water.
3. Membrane Filtration
Semi-permeable membranes with extremely fine pores separate pure water from salts and contaminants.
4. Separation of Treated Water and Wastewater
The water that passes through the membrane is collected as permeate, or treated water. The remaining concentrated water is discharged as concentrate, or wastewater.
